Dakota Fanning Deals with Rape and Child Abuse
Child star Dakota Fanning, who turned 12 this year, is venturing into sexually disturbing territory in a movie being filmed in North Carolina. “Hounddog” is a dark story of abuse, violence and Elvis Presley adulation in the rural South, written and directed by Deborah Kampmeier. Fanning’s character gets raped in one explicit scene and appears naked or clad only in “underpants” in several other horrifying moments.
Fanning’s mother, Joy, and her Hollywood agent, Cindy Osbrink, see the movie as a possible Oscar vehicle for the pint-size star. But despite Fanning’s status as a bankable actress – whose movies, including last year’s “War of the Worlds,” have earned more than half a billion dollars since 2001 – the alarming material seems to have scared off potential investors from the under-$5 million indie project. “The two taboos in Hollywood are child abuse and the killing of animals,” a source close to the situation told me. “In this movie, both things happen.” Fanning’s carefully choreographed rape scene has already been filmed. But then the production – which also stars Robin Wright Penn, David Morse and Piper Laurie – was shut down for lack of funds. Penn, who’s also an executive producer, gave a pep talk to the dispirited cast in the days leading up to the shutdown. The desperate producer, Jen Gatien, daughter of former club czar Peter Gatien, sent out an SOS to New York entertainment entrepreneur Lawrence Robins. Robins located emergency investors, filming resumed, and the movie is scheduled to wrap tomorrow. “The subject matter is very tough,” Robins told me, “but I was attracted to it because in the end it’s a story about human understanding, about a little girl who’s dealt a very bad deck of cards, but finds solace in the music of Elvis and survives.” The script requires the preteen actress to confront tougher challenges than Brooke Shields and Jodie Foster did when, at Fanning’s age, they played child prostitutes. “It’s not just the rape scene – the whole story is challenging Dakota as an actress,” Fanning’s longtime agent, Osbrink, told me. “And I’ve never been so proud of her in my life. I’ve seen the dailies, and in every scene she gets better and better.”

Here is stark proof of our contention that depravity only leads to more and greater depravity. A child was desecrated on a film set. Three children, in fact… one of whom was once the most beloved child in the country. They were led to directly participate in sexual scenes on a sound stage with adult actors and even with each other. Outside of overt child porn, this has never before been done… not even in predecessor films such as “Pretty Baby” and “Taxi Driver”.
This was done with the connivance of parents and agents who thought of their children more as sources of revenue than as beloved sons and daughters. It was done by a woman who labored on her perverted dream film as writer and director for TEN YEARS while investor after investor abandoned her in horror after discovering the true extent and content of her “vision”. It was abetted by legal authorities who could not summon the moral resolve to defy Hollywood’s power and uphold the laws that protect children from such usage. Finally, in doing this movie, they managed to come closer than any feature film ever has to legitimizing child sex and exploitation. In fact, if any of the anonymous sources from that film set spoke truely, the gap between legitimate films and child pornography was actually bridged in the process of shooting.
“Hounddog” failed to find a distributor at the Sundance Film Festival. It’s reviews were universally bad… if only for other than moral reasons. It will likely not be seen in theaters. To present it at all, the filmmakers were forced to edit out the scenes that would have exposed their criminality to an aroused public. That’s the good news.
The bad is that it will almost certainly go to DVD. It will inspire other degenerate Hollywood types to try again. It will endanger the moral health of children who will find a way to obtain a DVD because Dakota is in it. It will further endanger them physically because of the like “inspiration” it will give to the deviants and pedophiles among us. This is already the case. The remarks of Matt Mullins above are hardly the only ones of it’s kind you will find around the internet.
A year ago, Dakota Fanning was on top of the world. At the age of twelve, she had many fine movies to her credit. Two of her best family films, “Dreamer” and “Charlotte’s Web”, had already been completed. There were some disturbing signs here and there, but no one believed other than that she would continue to make good films and be a credit to her young and growing generation. She commanded THREE MILLION DOLLARS per movie by the age of twelve!
But, even as she was doing those films (plus “War Of The Worlds”) an ugly script had been placed before her by her scheming handlers. Afraid that her career would evaporate in her teens (and with it, their percentages) they decided to “adultize” her as soon as possible.
This they did… and at what a terrible price! From a happy and loved child, she has since become a lonely, isolated and miserable one. Defamed and exploited by those who should have loved her more than any and rendered old before her time… and psychologically scarred from an experience that no child should ever have been led to endure. And it won’t stop with her ruination. It will be passed on in part to every child around the world who once loved her.
And this will now be her sole legacy. Contrast that with the shining one that seemed destined to be…before the word “Hounddog” was whispered in an innocent and unsuspecting little ear.
