Michael Richard’s racist rant earlier this month may not have been the fluke outburst his publicist would have you believe. Industry insiders are claiming that Richards is mentally unstable, “bizarre,” and “temperamental.” TMZ reports:

Sam Simon, longtime producer on “The Simpsons”… told Howard Stern [yesterday] that Richards… once quit [The Michael Richards Show] in the middle of production… with a full studio audience in attendance and wouldn’t return until coaxed back by the president of the network. What’s more, Richards once stood on his head in the middle of a shot, inexplicably, and was once found in a corner of a soundstage, weeping uncontrollably.

If I had a nickel for every time I ended up standing on my head while weeping in a corner, I’d be writing this from the shores of a private millionaire beach while sipping a martini. But instead, I’m typing this in a bus station in Kranston while chugging Old Milwaukee from a paper bag because you bastards never give me spare change for my public breakdowns. I usually just get pointings and stares and an occasional “Ma’am, I’m gonna have to ask you to leave” from the local establishment. And sometimes “Mommy, she smells like tinkle,” and “Oh my God, is that… oh, God, it is. Somebody get some sawdust.” Ah, the slings and arrows of misunderstood genius.
