Richard Gere supports hookers. The 57-year-old star whipped up a pep rally of 10,000 sex workers in Mumbai, India, this week, getting them to chant, “No condoms, no sex!”… Gere said “Before, there was a total lack of knowledge among sex workers about HIV . . . Now there is a radical change. When sex workers speak of condoms as a norm, it is a powerful statement, it empowers them.”
You know what might be a tad more empowering? Encouraging the 10,000 assembled sex workers to quit fucking dirty Indian truck drivers for money. You know, not having sex with impoverished Indian men is another ingenious way to halt the AIDS epidemic in Mumbai. Or maybe Gere could have mentioned that HIV isn’t a divine punishment from the displeased goddess Durga or the result of “bad blood” and “black bile,” but instead a blood and semen born pathogen. Silly, I know. He probably should have just had them strip down, spread eagle, and do the “bicycle” for the crowd. Woo-hoo! Vagina for sale! Try to remember to use a rubber, guys! what mr. gere is doing is beneficial, and more than most can say they are doing to help the third world. I’m not saying we’re all obligated to help, but if he has taken it upon himself to try and improve a dire situation, why make fun of him? I suppose it’s good that someone has chosen to write up his remarks and alert people to the situation, but with such a snarky tone and obvious dissaproval of his noble actions, this blurb is quite offfensive to humanitarians and oppressed sex workers. Why can’t you just make fun of movies and outfits like decent people?

it’s not always possible to clean up prostitution in certain circumstances. these people who had left messages here who are overly critical of Richard Gere and / or the prostitutes in India should count their blessings and leave it at that. Imagine if you were born of poor family where you don’t even have food on the table, no education, no skills, no government support and no opportunity to make your life better. In my opinion these overly judgmental people need to shut the f up.

Not all third world countries have fanatics that would strap a bomb to their fucking chest, abby. That is really slack.
Even though they are poor, the majority surely would still be smart enough to chose life over death. Despite prostituion being a terrible way to earn money, it is true that it cannot be eliminated. I mean, Richard should have encouraged the children to go to and finish school and get an education, because it offers career choices and freedom. The sad thing is, lots of these people cannot go to school, because of poverty, so they have no choice but to take these hard and terrible jobs. It’s a vicious cycle. If he cannot eliminate poverty, he at least wants to try to save the women from aids and the spread of it.
And i mean, what’s with all the rage? If you don’t agree with him, that is fine to tell your opinion, but jesus…. speaking of overly judgement.
