Miley Cyrus Offends Asians with Slant-Eyed Picture

A group knows as the OCA — an organization “dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans” — is demanding an apology from Miley Cyrus for engaging in an “offensive, stereotypical gesture” in the above photograph. They released the following statement to TMZ:

“The photograph of Miley Cyrus and other individuals slanting their eyes currently circulating the Internet is offensive to the Asian Pacific American community and sets a terrible example for her many young fans. This image falls within a long and unfortunate history of people mocking and denigrating individuals of Asian descent……Not only has Miley Cyrus and the other individuals in the photograph encouraged and legitimized the taunting and mocking of people of Asian descent, she has also insulted her many Asian Pacific American fans. The inclusion of an Asian Pacific American individual in the photo does not make it acceptable.

We hope that Miley Cyrus will apologize to her fans and the APA community for this lapse in judgment and takes the opportunity to better understand why the gesture is offensive.”

The OCA is absolutely right. That picture wasn’t funny at all. She should have made buck teeth and bowed while saying “Me so sowwy! Me no likey the sucky-sucky!” and maybe done a couple of karate chops. Some people just don’t know the finer points of executing a good joke.

    Actually, I somehow think she does enjoy the sucky-sucky. Either way I don’t think this is all that offensive, might be different if the asian guy wasn’t there. Oh and don’t joke about the karate chops, its in their DNA, they’ll take you out.

    While I personally don’t find the picture to be super offensive, I think any rational person can see that there’s basis for which an Asian may be offended. Your analysis and the comments made in response to this post were rather ignorant.

    I suppose what bothers me is that for some reason, if someone offends an African American, it’s the end of the world, but hey, you can say or do whatever you want regarding any other minority.

    Imagine if Miley and her friends had painted their faces black and stuck their lips out. I doubt that you would be making the comments that you’ve made here.

    And to argue that it’s ok because there’s an Asian in the picture is a rather asinine remark. All that does is make that individual appear like an idiot for not realizing that he’s being mocked by all his friends, or a coward for realizing it and not standing up for himself.

    Like I said, I’m not easily offended. When I see this picture, I think, “Ignorant kids don’t know any better.”

    But I’m pretty sick of this double standard.

    I think that this is ridiculous! She is a teenager having fun with her friends. I think people are too sensitive these days. No matter what you say or do someone is always offended by it. Oh well! If she and her friends made funny “pig” faces, you know with the middle finger holding up the nose to look like a pigs snout, would pigs be offended?? Not that those of asian origin are pigs, but do you see how ridiculous this is???

    asians always get picked on because they dont stand up for themselves, so i’m glad this group is speaking out against the pictures. if she did something that insulted the black community, then there would be an uproar no? what she did was def. insensitive and ignorant, goes to show just how smart she is. very disappointed, she is a terrible role model for kids everywhere.

    I just want to understand WHY this is offensive to so many Asian people. I don’t really see how… but I’m not Asian. If a bunch of friends are having fun and going ‘wooo… now we look asian… yay!’ How is that bad?? When I was growing up, I did that all the time. I WANTED to have slanty eyes and be pretty like so many asian people are. I just don’t understand why, when people do this, an asian person would be offended. Does it feel like they’re saying… um… what does it seem like they’re saying? What is the message you are getting that is so terrible??
    I’m actually, honestly asking this because I don’t know. I really don’t know, but I WANT to know… so I can understand. Please tell me!!

    Hey Maia,

    I think I can try to answer your question. I generally do find the slanty eye thing offensive. I used to actually have friends that did that, and they were generally insensitive people. None of my friends I’ve met since I became an adult ever did that.

    I think this picture is not too bad since they seem to just be kidding around, and plus, I don’t like Miley Cyrus anyway. But I will say this, if my idol, Michelle Pfeiffer, did this with her friends in a pic, I would denounce my pfandom right away and throw out all 31 movies I have of hers.

    Not that she would ever do that in a million years, or that I would see her as a bad person, but I would just be really offended if a star I actually cared about did it.

    I don’t know, I guess that just proves that it is offensive. I always hated it when people called out my race. One time, as a kid, my friend’s father said he was shocked that I spoke english so well. Please, I was born here, and you know what? I scored way higher than his son on the English Regents exams.

    Anyway, no matter what, calling out someone’s race is offensive. Even when people try to “compliment” me saying that I must be good at math. It’s really just annoying to hear, and you know what, my math abilities are average at best hahaha.

    It just makes me wish I were white so I could pass through other people’s radar of stupidity. If I could take away all the stupid Asian racism I’ve faced in my life, umm, actually, wow, I just realized how much HAPPIER I would be. But blah blah I’m an adult now and I accept who I am.
