Mayer then told the paparazzi outside that he was taking the Rob person to the hospital. Then they drove off, presumably to hole up in a treehouse someplace with a hand-drawn "No Girls Allowed" sign, where they giggled a lot as they Twittered themselves retarded about some made-up medical drama. So sure, if you wanted, you could call that a joke... but a normal person would call that a desperate, lame, attention-whoring prank.
