Kate Upton’s Harper’s Bazaar Shoot Angers PETA
Sports Illustrated swimsuit covergirl Kate Upton has animal rights activists all up in arms this week after newly-released pics from her photo shoot for Harper’s Bazaar show her posing with a three-month-old tiger cub and a baby gibbon. PETA said in a statement:
All the animals in the photographs are endangered and should be protected, rather than being treated like props.
Wild animals used for photo shoots have been taken away from their mothers at birth and deprived of everything that is natural and important to them. The gibbon featured in the photographs is an infant and should be with his mother at all times. Besides the emotional trauma that he has undoubtedly suffered as a result of the separation, his delicate immune system is still developing, and he is susceptible to illnesses that humans carry.
Except all the animals featured in the shoot were not actually “ripped from their mothers” like PETA suggested, but “[human-reared] from day one because their mothers rejected them,” according to the Miami-based Zoological Wildlife Foundation which provided them. Additionally, the animals were accompanied by professional licensed handlers at all times and even had their own air-conditioned trailer, and at no point were they eaten by a parent, trampled by an elephant, starved, sick or dehydrated. As far as those things go, that’s a pretty darn good day for a tiger.
