Steven Tyler Quits American Idol

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler announced today that he would not be returning for the twelfth season of American Idol. He said in a statement:

“After some long… hard… thoughts I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress ‘American Idol’ before she boils my rabbit… I strayed from my first love, AEROSMITH, and I’m back – but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I’ve got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band.”

“IDOL was over-the-top fun, and I loved every minute of it.”

And fellow judge Jennifer Lopez all but confirmed that she wouldn’t be coming back on the Today Show this morning (clip below), and now there’s speculation that longtime judge Randy Jackson is leaving, too. Us Magazine says:

Randy Jackson… plans to leave the judges’ panel but remain involved with a mentoring role on the show.

“[Show producers] think they need to freshen everything up now,” the source explains. “They are in serious talks with Mariah Carey and it’s very close to being a done deal,” the source says. “And they will move Randy into a more mentoring role.”

Other celebs who have been considered to sit at the judges’ table include Fergie and Adam Lambert.

Someone take this show around back and shoot it already. It’s past its prime, just like Jennifer Lopez. It’s really just a question of how long Fox will let it keep circling the drain before they finally pull the plug.
